Abarax (Benznidazol) is an anti-parasitic medication. It is used to treat Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis). Benznidazol works by producing free radicals.
Adults should take 5mg-7mg per kg of body weight in two divided dosages. Children under 12 years old should should take 10mg per kg of body weight in two divided dosages. Treatment should continue for 60 days.
During the first two weeks of treatment you may develop a rash and/or nausea.
If you develop symptoms of fever, peripheral polyneuritis or paresthesia you may need to discontinue use. Check with your doctor.
Less common side effects include leukopenia and agranulocytosis.
Patients with liver or kidney problems or with blood disorders will need to be monitored closely while taking Benznidazol.
Safety of Benznidazol during pregnancy has not been established. Do not take Benznidazol wduring the first trimester and do so in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters only if advised to by your doctor.
