Description
Androcur (Cyproterone Acetate) is in a class of drugs called anti-androgens. This medicine works by inhibiting the action of androgens (male sex hormones) in the body, and decreasing the production of male sex hormones. It is used either on its own, or together with other medications, to treat male patients for problems related to the prostate gland. Other conditions treated include hypersexuality and priapism, and in some cases, patients have taken it to treat acne and hirsutism. Male to female transsexuals believe that it may be useful for hormone therapy.
Androcur (Cyproterone Acetate) comes as tablets that contain 50mg of the primary ingredient. This drug must be taken in accordance with the directions provided by your physician. In some situations, adult patients may be instructed to take a dose consisting of 1 tablet, taken twice per day, either with food or just after a meal. The dosage may be adjusted by the prescribing physician. Remember that you should never take more than the amount prescribed, as this may be harmful.
Patients who take Androcur (Cyproterone Acetate) might notice some side effects, such as:
- Gynecomastia
- Changes in weight
- A low sperm count
- Less semen released during intercourse
- Depression, tiredness and restlessness
