Claribid (Clarithromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic which is effective against many infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, infections of the sinus, skin, throat and elsewhere in the body. It exhibits a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against many aerobic gram negative and gram positive microorganisms, as well as other types of bacteria. Physicians have even used it in combination other types of medication to get rid of helicobacter pylori in patients affected by stomach ulcers.
Always follow the prescription and directions provided by your doctor. Do not self medicate or alter your dosage unless advised to do so by a qualified healthcare professional. Correct dosage varies depending on the condition. It is common for adult patients to be told to take Clarithromycin twice per day at 12 hour intervals. The typical course of medication lasts from 1 to 2 weeks.
However, certain conditions may require treatment for a longer period of time. Even if your symptoms improve, you should finish the entire prescribed amount of medicine, as stopping treatment early could result in a return of your symptoms. Tablets should be swallowed whole, alongside a full glass of water, and can be taken either with or without food.
Treating bacterial infections with Claribid (Clarithromycin) can sometimes result in side effects, such as:
You should tell your doctor about any side effects you experience while you are taking Clarithromycin. Serious side effects can also occur, and require immediate medical attention. Other side effects which have not been listed here may also occur.
Claribid (Clarithromycin) may trigger bowel inflammation in some patients, and this may occur during or after treatment. See your physician straight away if you notice bloody or serious diarrhea.
Liver problems may be associated with this medication in certain cases, and you are advised to fully discuss the risk of this with your physician prior to commencing treatment.
Claribid (Clarithromycin) is only effective against bacterial infections, and it will not treat viral infections.
