Cytomid (Flutamide) is classified as an antiandrogen. It treats prostate cancer by inhibiting the effects of testosterone and other androgens. These male hormones are known to contribute to the growth and proliferation of prostatic carcinoma. By acting to inhibit the uptake of these androgens and preventing testosterone from attaching to its receptors in the prostate gland, it is able to prevent the cancer cells from spreading. Usually, it is given alongside a type of hormone known as an LHRH (luteinizing hormone-releasing agonist).
Cytomid (Flutamide) tablets are administered orally. Men who are treating prostate cancer may be instructed by their physician to administer 250mg (1 tablet) every 8 hours for a total of 3 doses per day. Patients may take the medicine either with or without food, however the tablets should be swallowed together with a glass of water. If you are being given an LHRH as part of your treatment, instructions relating to the dosage of this will be provided by your physician.
If you notice any side effects during treatment with the antiandrogen Cytomid (Flutamide) it is important that you notify your physician. Possible reactions may include:
The above list of side effects is not complete and other reactions may occur. Immediately see your physician if you notice jaundice, severe pain affecting the upper stomach, discolored urine or any other severe adverse events which are not referenced here.
Patients who are being given Cytomid (Flutamide) may also be provided with special dietary instructions so as to help avoid diarrhea. Regular blood tests will also be ordered by your physician.
If treatment with this medicine is abruptly withdrawn, the condition could worsen.
