Gestone

Gestone (Progesterone) is used to treat women for menorrhagia or other conditions involving irregular menstrual bleeding. It is also used to maintain early pregnancy in some women or to assist IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment by helping an egg that has been fertilized to implant in the womb. The active ingredient in this solution is a female hormone that is involved in the regulation of menstruation and ovulation. During the menstrual cycle, progesterone is produced by the body so as to help regulate the womb lining`s shedding and growth.

When injected, this medicine works like natural progesterone and helps regularize the shedding and growth of the womb. Progesterone also has other functions, and one of these is maintaining a pregnancy by acting on the lining of the womb and causing it to become thicker so as to allow for a fertilized egg to become implanted. It also helps with the implantation of fertilized eggs during fertility treatment.

Gestone (Progesterone) is administered by means of intramuscular injection, directly into the buttock. The injection will be given by your physician. Each ampoule contains 1ml of the solution, equal to 50mg of the active ingredient. Deciding the correct dosage will be the responsibility of the physician, and the required dosage may be different for each patient depending on why it is being used. Treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding usually requires a dosage ranging from 5mg to 10mg, given for roughly 5 to 10 days until 2 days before the menstrual period starts.

When physicians are giving this solution for the maintenance of pregnancy, patients are normally treated with 2 injections or more per week, with the exact amount being administered with each administration varying depending on the opinion of the physician. Physicians normally begin treating patients on day 15, or else on the day the embryo is transferred, and it is continued until 6 to 8 weeks of the pregnancy.

Gestone (Progesterone) could cause some side effects, and it will be necessary to tell your physician if this occurs. Some examples are listed here:

• Sleep problems
• Discolored skin on the face
• Irritation at the injection site
• Loss of hair noticeable on the scalp
• Increased or decreased body weight

Other side effects could also be experienced by the patient. Go to see your physician straight away if you notice disturbances or blurring of your eyesight, swelling occurring in the eye, migraine headaches or any other severe reactions which are not referenced in this paragraph.

Gestone (Progesterone) is used under the supervision of a physician and should not be self injected as patients may not be aware of how to safely administer it themselves.
