Ovestin

Ovestin (Oestriol) is a short-term hormone replacement therapy (HRT) prescribed to women who are suffering from atrophic vaginitis (vaginal atrophy) which is a common vaginal symptom of the menopause, caused by a lack of oestrogen production by the ovaries. This medicine helps restore the vaginal tissue, reducing symptoms and preventing recurrent infections. Your doctor may prescribe this medication for other unlisted conditions.

Strictly use Ovestin (Oestriol) as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by your doctor. Safe, suitable, and optimum dosage can vary and is dependent on the patient`s health and medical history, as well as the condition you are treating.

The dose you take depends on what you are being treated for and your doctor`s recommendation, usually 2-4 tablets per day for the first week, depending on relief of symptoms and your doctor`s recommendation. You should continue to take it until symptoms improve or for as long as recommended by your doctor.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is more than 12 hours overdue and time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.

Side effects of vestin (Oestriol) may include:

• breast tenderness
• breast pain

More severe but less common side effects include blood clots in the veins which can result in thromboembolism.

Ovestin (Oestriol) should not be used in patients who are breastfeeding, pregnant, or have known or suspected breast cancer, angina, recent stroke, recent heart attack, endometrial cancer, endometrial hyperplasia, porphyrias, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or severe liver disease.

Disclose any health conditions you have that may cause complications to your doctor. These include a family history of breast cancer, obesity, heart failure, history of blood clots, history of endometrial hyperplasia, high triglyceride levels, recurrent miscarriage, history of liver disease, history of uterine fibroids, benign breast lumps, history of epilepsy, gallstones, migraines, asthma, diabetes, or reduced liver or kidney function. These can require reduced doses or other alterations to your regimen to prevent health problems from occurring.
