Proin (Phenylpropanolamine HCL) is indicated for the management of canine urinary incontinence caused by urethral sphincter hypotonus. Its mechanism of action is acting on the urethral sphincter and the bladder so as to correct poor sphincter tone. This is achieved by targeting both the alpha and beta adrenergic receptors of the smooth muscles so as to trigger the release of norepinephrine. Problems related to sphincter tone may prevent the bladder from properly closing, which could cause urine to leak out. By correcting this problem, these tablets can help control incontinence and prevent unwanted leakages.
Proin (Phenylpropanolamine HCL) is provided in tablet form of which there are 2 varieties available (25mg and 50mg strength tablets). The tablets are chewable, allowing them to be fed directly to the dog. Determining the right dosage for your dog will be the responsibility of the veterinarian, and it will usually be 0.91mg per lb of body weight, administered twice each day. As the tablets are scored, it may be necessary to break them in half to ensure accurate dosing. Full compliance with all instructions given by the veterinarian will be required at all times.
If your dog exhibits symptoms of side effects after taking Proin (Phenylpropanolamine HCL) chewable tablets, it should be taken to see a veterinarian. Some side effects which may occur are listed here:
Other side effects which have not been listed above are also possible.
Proin (Phenylpropanolamine HCL) tablets are only approved for use in dogs. Humans must not take these tablets under any circumstances.
