Topamax

Topamax (Topiramate) is used to help control some types of seizures caused by epilepsy. It should be noted that this medicine will not cure epilepsy and is only meant to control symptoms associated with this condition. It is commonly used in combination with other anticonvulsants to get better results. The medication operates by preventing unusual nerve impulses in the brain to stop seizures from occurring.

The typical dosage of Topamax (Topiramate) is one tablet administered twice each day, but your individual symptoms will be determined by the severity of your symptoms. These should be swallowed whole and unaltered along with a large glass of water. They may be taken on an empty stomach, but a snack or meal may be recommended before use if you experience nausea.

Side effects that may occur in some patients using Topamax (Topiramate) include:

• Dizziness
• Numbness
• Bad taste in the mouth
• Diarrhea
• Skin flushing
• Flu symptoms

Serious side effects that may occur in some patients include vomiting, dry mouth, severe pain, confusion, or vision problems. Stop using the medication and seek emergency medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling, skin rashes, or difficulty breathing.

Topamax (Topiramate) should not be used to treat patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or lactose intolerant. Also disclose if you have a history of depression, breathing disorders, porphyrias, history of kidney stones, hypercalciuria, or decreased liver or kidney function as these conditions may cause unexpected complications during treatment.
