Epivir

Epivir Oral Solution (Lamivudine) is prescribed for use in combination with other drugs as a treatment for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This drug belongs to a class of medicines called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, and when taken, it can reduce the amount of the HIV virus in the blood. This is important, as it can help to improve the action of the immune system, thereby reducing the risk of certain health conditions associated with HIV (for example, cancer and infections). In some cases, patients who may have come into contact with the HIV virus may be prescribed this medicine to prevent infection.

Prior to starting treatment with Epivir Oral Solution (Lamivudine), you will need to visit your physician for a thorough medical assessment. This solution is taken by mouth, however, it is important to use a spoon or medicine cup, so as to measure the correct amount of medicine required. In some cases, adult patients undergoing treatment with this medicine have been instructed to take 300mg per day, administered as two 150mg doses (15ml of the medicine). However, the dosage instructions may vary for certain patients, and it is essential that you follow all instructions provided by your physician.

Patients taking Epivir Oral Solution (Lamivudine) as a treatment for HIV may experience:

• Fatigue
• Loss of hair
• Blocked nose
• Dizzy sensation
• Reduced appetite

Inform your physician of any side effects which are bothersome. In rare cases, patients may experience severe side effects. You must immediately seek medical attention if you notice pain affecting the muscles, fever, numbness affecting the fingers or toes, or any other symptoms of a severe reaction.

Although it is rare, in some cases, this drug has been known to cause a serious problem that affects the blood and liver called lactic acidosis. Discuss all of the risks of treatment with your physician prior to taking this medicine.

This drug will not prevent you from spreading HIV to others. Talk to your physician about ways to stop spreading the virus to other people.
